8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course for Security Guards
The first step in becoming a New York State security guard is to complete the 8 Hour Security Course (Pre-Assignment) prior to applying to the Department of State for a Security Guard Registration Card.
If you are a good communicator, and have passed a background check with no serious convictions or felonies, there are many job opportunities you can pursue in the security industry. This course is where it all begins. For those who want to pursue a career as a security professional, Knight Training Institute (KTI) offers continuing security guard training classes under the direction of Edward Troiano, our founder and security expert.
The 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course for Security Guards provides students with a general overview of the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. Topics covered in the course include:
- Role of the security guard
- Legal powers and limitations
- Emergency situations
- Communications and public relations
- Access control
- Ethics and conduct
All courses are available either online via Zoom or in-person, you will be asked when registering how you will attend. Students must attend the entire 8 Hour Security training. An examination will be given on the same day and a minimum passing score of 70% is required to become a New York State certified security guard. KTI will provide a certificate of completion to all students with a passing score.
The 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course for Security Guards course must be followed by the 16 Hour On-the-Job Training Course for Security Guards within 90 days of initial employment as a security guard. KTI offers the 16 Hour Course, in addition to the 8 Hour Annual In-Service Training Course for Security Guards, which guards must complete every year. For security guards interested in celebrity and executive protection, KTI also offers the Celebrity & Executive Protection Training Course.
New York State law requires registration and training of security guards in the state. KTI is a New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services approved security guard training school.
