Get FLDS Certified
In New York City, all commercial offices, hotels, and other buildings with installed fire alarm systems must be staffed with a qualified Fire and Life Safety Director. This 31-hour course is offered in two components and will train fire safety personnel to build, create, and implement fire safety plans, including evacuation strategies, and perform all other fire and emergency related duties. To become a Fire Life Safety Director, you must:
- Meet the following qualifications set forth by FDNY. For any questions regarding your eligibility, you can contact FDNY directly at pubcert@fdny.nyc.gov or call 718-999-1988.
- Sign the FLSD qualification acknowledgment form.
- Download the FLSD F89/T89 Notice of Exam that details procedures, processes, and sample letters.
- Register for this course. You must complete the 31-hour course prior to testing at FDNY Headquarters.
- Attend all sessions for this course and pass the final exam with 70% or higher.
Receive a letter of completion from Knight Training Institute valid for 9 months from the date of issue. - Take and pass the Fire and Non-Fire Component computer-based test (CBT) at FDNY Headquarters within 9 months of course completion. In order to complete the aforementioned steps, you MUST do the following in this order:
- Create a NYC ID, FDNY business account ID and submit an online application and payment. Online Class Instructions
The Fire Life Safety Director course will be offered as a live Zoom session. The training link will be emailed to you 1 day prior to the start of class, so please provide a valid email address. To ensure that the class begins on time, please enter the online classroom 10 minutes prior to the start of each session. To maintain the standard and integrity of the training, we are adhering to the FDNY attendance protocols which require attendance checks throughout the sessions at regular intervals. You must use a laptop or desktop computer with a camera function that must be turned on throughout the course and the exam, or you will be marked absent. Please note that cell phones with a built-in camera are not optimized for proctoring and will not be acceptable for the final exam.
